Update: The ZEV program has been updated in 2022
Update: We now have a single page to consolidate Federal/Provincial/Municipal EV related incentive programs.
Starting May 1 2019, the Government of Canada is offering purchase and lease incentives for eligible EV/PHEVs. The particulars are a little… well… particular:
Vehicles with 6 or fewer seats, and a starting price under $45,000, with models up to $55,000 (MSRP) will be eligible. And for 7+ seat vehicles, the starting price threshold is increased to $55,000, so long as the vehicle maxes out at $60,000.
Larger battery vehicles will receive an incentive of $5,000, while those with smaller batteries will receive $2,500.
Dealers will reduce the vehicle by the incentive price – you, the consumer, will have no additional paperwork and will receive the savings immediately.
The eligible vehicles include:
Audi A3 e-tron ($2,500)
Chevy Bolt and Volt ($5,000)
Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid ($5,000)
Ford Fusion Energi ($2,500)
Ford Focus EV ($5,000)
Honda Clarity PHEV ($5,000)
Hyundai Ioniq EV and Kona EV ($5,000) and Ioniq PHEV and Sonata PHEV ($2,500)
Kia Soul EV and Niro EV ($5,000) and Niro PHEV and Optima PHEV ($2,500)
Mini Countryman PHEV ($2,500)
Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV ($2,500)
Nissan Leaf ($5,000)
Tesla Model 3 SR & SR+ ($5,000)
Toyota Prius Prime PHEV ($2,500)
VW e-Golf ($5,000)
Smart EVs ($5,000)
Please refer to Transport Canada for the most up-to-date list.
I will be ordering a Tesla Cyber Truck. Will it be covered in 2021?
Unlikely. The vehicle needs to start under $45k CAD and the trick looks to be $52k CAD. Also, it is impossible to predict if the incentive will still be around in 2021 or whenever the truck is available. Our recommendation is to assume you will not get the incentive and plan accordingly.
Hi just wonder if the dealer even forget or on purposely didn’t include the rebate for the final price how can I do to get the rebate?
The rebate is designed to be taken off at the time of purchase, there is no action needed by the customer.
The Audi A3 e-tron base model starts at 90k sooo I’m very confused as to how it’s eligible for the incentive yet the Tesla Long Range isn’t???
The list of eligible vehicles specifically references the PHEV 2018 A3 e-tron – a plugin hybrid – and not the current pure EV model ($90k as you point out). Confusing names/situation for sure!
I wonder if the 2021 Toyota Sienna Hybrid would be applicable since it uses the same Hybrid system as the Rav4 prime.
It does not appear in https://tc.canada.ca/en/road-transportation/innovative-technologies/zero-emission-vehicles/list-eligible-vehicles-under-izev-program and thus is not eligible.
Is Alberta currently covered on this EV incentive program ? if so, until when ?
Yes, Alberta is indeed included, for as long as the incentive program runs, the end date of which is difficult to predict. It was funded with $300 million to last 3 years, but has seen larger than expected demand as customers have responded quite favourably with EV purchases.
Does this incentive apply to used vehicles that are on the list? Under what circumstances would that have to happen?
No, used vehicles are not part of the incentive, not directly anyway. Of course, once those cars hit the used market, their value may be adjusted and thus be a bit more affordable second hand.
Is it likely a rebate will be offered for the Toyota RAV4 Prime?
Does the Tesla model Y with long range battery qualify for any tax incentives?
No. The Model 3 barely qualified – Tesla had to introduce the Standard Range to Canada, price it very low, and as a result, also limited its range to only 150km (as the REALLY don’t want consumers buying it). But in doing so, the SR+ just made the inclusion list. The Model Y starts at too high a price. However, when the 7 seat variant is available, different pricing limitations apply, and it could be included.
Is the Mustang Mach-E going to be added to this list? The lower end model falls into the category above. Thanks
All depends on official pricing, but it is certainly plausible that it is included.
It is so sad a price cap was included, the Model Y is the perfect Canadian EV. With only losing 10% (est) range in winter as opposed to up to 30% for the rest of the lineup. We will go test drive the 3 and the Y see how we feel. Of course we will wait to purchase til after battery day 😀 Happy shopping everyone!
The 7 seat Model Y could be included, as it will have a different price cap to work under.
Is it possible to raise the minimum cost to include newer EVs like the ID.4, Mach-e and Ariya
We certainly would support that, but it is up to the federal government, and we’ve heard no indications that they intend to reconsider the cost threshold.
Is this incentive program available in Calgary, Alberta?
Yes it is, it is a federal incentive, available to all Canadians.
Is the Tesla Model 3 “long range” included in the incentives for Alberta buyer? Just curious, since it has a larger battery capacity.
The long range was never included, and the Model 3 is no longer included at all due to Tesla raising the price/changing their lineup – it now exceeds the price cap for eligibility.
I have a Cybertruck 4WD on order for my business. Is there a category for Business Use EV’s?
Not presently, unfortunately.
Does this incentive apply to electric motorcycles such as the Zero FXS?
Not that we are aware of.
As Manufacturers are bringing new products to market. How often will the list of eligible vehicles be updated?
I ordered a Jeep Wrangler 4XE PHEV with a 17.3 KW/hr battery. MSRP is $54995 on this vehicle.
Will the New Wrangler 4XE be eligible for the Federal incentive?
The website https://tc.canada.ca/en/road-transportation/innovative-technologies/zero-emission-vehicles/list-eligible-vehicles-under-izev-program is updated on an ongoing basis to account for new vehicle eligibility.
Are there any incentives for the wall charger installation?
This can depend on which municipality you reside in. Best to check with your local government officials/websites.
hi, I am looking at purchasing a mustang mach e. are there incentives on those.
No, Mach E does not qualify at this time.
Is there a Calgary Home EV Level 2 charger rebate program similar to the Edmonton one?
Not that we are aware of presently, sorry.
As mentioned earlier, Model Y could be included. Please can you let me know the inclusion of Model Y Long Range which start at 70k.
The Y remains excluded at this time.
2021 Model Y Long Range, is it eligible to get incentive
No, it exceeds the price limit for incentives.
I am looking at a 2022 Hyundia Tuscon, in Hybrid, would this vehicle fit the qualifications for this program? Price of vehicle is about $40,000
Yes, The Tucson PHEV is eligible. https://tc.canada.ca/en/road-transportation/innovative-technologies/zero-emission-vehicles/list-eligible-vehicles-under-izev-program has the complete list.
Hello,
Is there an incentive program for two wheeled electric motorcycles/scooters like Zero Motorcycles or NIU and Vespa scooters?
Thank you. Have a good week.
Not at this time.
Hi, I just got the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe, does this qualify for the incentive please?
I have a Honda Clarity and love it. are there any grants to add extra batteries to stretch the electric range ( currently 78 kms.)
Bob
We are not aware of anything available for modifying vehicles (though with grants, there could be something obscure that would be applicable).
Hi,
Just wondering Audi released a newer EV called Audi Q4 E-Tron. Is it going to get the rebate? Please and thanks
Q4 e-tron is included. See https://tc.canada.ca/en/road-transportation/innovative-technologies/zero-emission-vehicles/list-eligible-vehicles-under-izev-program for up to date list.
Has the Model Y, been included as yet?
Model Y exceeds the price cut off and is not included at this time.
Why is there no incentive for Tesla? The model 3 could be under 55000. Also is it possible for the government to stop giving the incentives for hybrids as it is worst for the environment than an internal combustion engine cars?
Tesla Model 3 was initially included, but Tesla increased prices/changed offering, removing their eligibility.
The available vehicle list is missing a few notable purchase options officially… This alone deserves more attention for enacting future policies and educated long-term consumer-based market decisions. Personally, I’d love hear various brand owners speak up exempt from this benefit. We have the unique opportunity to approach the future of neutral vehicles accordingly. If the purchase price of a new vehicle is barometer for the rebate, then surely there is no real plan to reflect incentives evenly across a market of future EV or PHEV owners. Surprising as it may be, AB here…
Are used EV’s imported to Canada and licensed for the first time in Canada qualify ?
No. Used vehicles do not qualify at this time.
I am purchasing a 2022 Jeep Wrangle 4xe (plug in Hybrid) does this vehicle qualify for any tax credit?
Yes, $2500. See https://tc.canada.ca/en/road-transportation/innovative-technologies/zero-emission-vehicles/list-eligible-vehicles-under-izev-program for more info.
Are there any incentives for off-highway vehicles? Dump trucks, forklifts, tractors, loaders, etc.? If so, could you send me resources?
https://mccac.ca/programs/electric-vehicles-for-municipalities-program/ has some applicable information.
Does the province of Alberta offer an additional incentive for “clean” vehicles?
Not to consumers, no. There are programs for and by municipalities that offer various incentives. These change periodically, so it is best to check with your local municipality.
