Update: We now have a single page to consolidate Federal/Provincial/Municipal EV related incentive programs.
Starting May 1 2019, the Government of Canada is offering purchase and lease incentives for eligible EV/PHEVs. The particulars are a little… well… particular:
Vehicles with 6 or fewer seats, and a starting price under $45,000, with models up to $55,000 (MSRP) will be eligible. And for 7+ seat vehicles, the starting price threshold is increased to $55,000, so long as the vehicle maxes out at $60,000.
Larger battery vehicles will receive an incentive of $5,000, while those with smaller batteries will receive $2,500.
Dealers will reduce the vehicle by the incentive price – you, the consumer, will have no additional paperwork and will receive the savings immediately.
The eligible vehicles include:
Audi A3 e-tron ($2,500)
Chevy Bolt and Volt ($5,000)
Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid ($5,000)
Ford Fusion Energi ($2,500)
Ford Focus EV ($5,000)
Honda Clarity PHEV ($5,000)
Hyundai Ioniq EV and Kona EV ($5,000) and Ioniq PHEV and Sonata PHEV ($2,500)
Kia Soul EV and Niro EV ($5,000) and Niro PHEV and Optima PHEV ($2,500)
Mini Countryman PHEV ($2,500)
Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV ($2,500)
Nissan Leaf ($5,000)
Tesla Model 3 SR & SR+ ($5,000)
Toyota Prius Prime PHEV ($2,500)
VW e-Golf ($5,000)
Smart EVs ($5,000)
Please refer to Transport Canada for the most up-to-date list.
I will be ordering a Tesla Cyber Truck. Will it be covered in 2021?
Unlikely. The vehicle needs to start under $45k CAD and the trick looks to be $52k CAD. Also, it is impossible to predict if the incentive will still be around in 2021 or whenever the truck is available. Our recommendation is to assume you will not get the incentive and plan accordingly.
Hi just wonder if the dealer even forget or on purposely didn’t include the rebate for the final price how can I do to get the rebate?
The rebate is designed to be taken off at the time of purchase, there is no action needed by the customer.
The Audi A3 e-tron base model starts at 90k sooo I’m very confused as to how it’s eligible for the incentive yet the Tesla Long Range isn’t???
The list of eligible vehicles specifically references the PHEV 2018 A3 e-tron – a plugin hybrid – and not the current pure EV model ($90k as you point out). Confusing names/situation for sure!
Is Alberta currently covered on this EV incentive program ? if so, until when ?
Yes, Alberta is indeed included, for as long as the incentive program runs, the end date of which is difficult to predict. It was funded with $300 million to last 3 years, but has seen larger than expected demand as customers have responded quite favourably with EV purchases.
Does this incentive apply to used vehicles that are on the list? Under what circumstances would that have to happen?
No, used vehicles are not part of the incentive, not directly anyway. Of course, once those cars hit the used market, their value may be adjusted and thus be a bit more affordable second hand.
Is it likely a rebate will be offered for the Toyota RAV4 Prime?
Does the Tesla model Y with long range battery qualify for any tax incentives?
No. The Model 3 barely qualified – Tesla had to introduce the Standard Range to Canada, price it very low, and as a result, also limited its range to only 150km (as the REALLY don’t want consumers buying it). But in doing so, the SR+ just made the inclusion list. The Model Y starts at too high a price. However, when the 7 seat variant is available, different pricing limitations apply, and it could be included.
Is the Mustang Mach-E going to be added to this list? The lower end model falls into the category above. Thanks
All depends on official pricing, but it is certainly plausible that it is included.
It is so sad a price cap was included, the Model Y is the perfect Canadian EV. With only losing 10% (est) range in winter as opposed to up to 30% for the rest of the lineup. We will go test drive the 3 and the Y see how we feel. Of course we will wait to purchase til after battery day 😀 Happy shopping everyone!
The 7 seat Model Y could be included, as it will have a different price cap to work under.
Is it possible to raise the minimum cost to include newer EVs like the ID.4, Mach-e and Ariya
We certainly would support that, but it is up to the federal government, and we’ve heard no indications that they intend to reconsider the cost threshold.
Is this incentive program available in Calgary, Alberta?
Yes it is, it is a federal incentive, available to all Canadians.
